New York City FC announced today that its MLS NEXT Pro affiliate, New York City FC II, will host USL Championship side New Mexico United in the Round of 16 of the 2024 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on Tuesday, May 21, at 7:30pm ET at Belson Stadium.
The ‘Boys in Blue’ advanced to the Round of 16 after securing a 1-0 victory against Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC in the tournament's Round of 32, becoming the last Division III team remaining. Advancing to the Round of 16 marks a notable milestone for New York City FC II, as it is the furthest the team has gotten in previous editions of the U.S. Open Cup (2019, 2022).
The ‘Boys in Blue’ have tallied 11 goals and eight assists, along with two clean sheets throughout the tournament. Forward Jonathan Jiménez leads New York City's front line with six contributions, consisting of four goals and two assists. He also is a Golden Boot contender in the competition, the only contender left in the competition. After successfully advancing to the Round of 16, New York City FC II is the only team with such a contender still in the running of the U.S. Open Cup.
